USA National Parks Guide

The United States National Park System is one of America's greatest treasures. Here is a guide to planning a national parks trip, from the most popular parks to practical tips.

The America the Beautiful Pass

The America the Beautiful annual pass costs $80 and provides access to all national parks, national monuments, and other federal recreation areas for one year. It covers the entry fee for the pass holder and up to three additional adults (children under 16 are always free). The pass pays for itself after visiting just two or three national parks and is strongly recommended for any visitor planning to see multiple parks.

Most Visited National Parks

Great Smoky Mountains (Tennessee/North Carolina) is the most visited national park in the US, with free admission. Grand Canyon (Arizona) is one of the world's most awe-inspiring natural wonders. Zion (Utah) offers spectacular canyon scenery and hiking. Yellowstone (Wyoming/Montana/Idaho) is the world's first national park, famous for geysers and wildlife. Yosemite (California) is renowned for its waterfalls, granite cliffs, and giant sequoias.

Utah's Mighty Five

Utah is home to five spectacular national parks within a relatively small area: Zion, Bryce Canyon, Arches, Canyonlands, and Capitol Reef. A road trip through the Mighty Five is one of America's great travel experiences, best done in spring or fall.

Booking and Reservations

Many popular national parks require timed entry reservations during peak season (spring and summer). Yosemite, Zion, Rocky Mountain, and Arches are among the parks that have implemented reservation systems. Check the National Park Service website (nps.gov) for current reservation requirements well in advance of your visit.

Safety and Leave No Trace

National parks are wild places. Follow Leave No Trace principles: pack out all trash, stay on designated trails, do not feed wildlife, and respect other visitors. Check weather forecasts before hiking. Tell someone your plans. Carry sufficient water β€” dehydration is a common cause of emergencies in desert parks.

Key Tips

  • Buy the America the Beautiful pass ($80) β€” it pays for itself quickly and supports the parks.

  • Book accommodation near popular parks months in advance β€” options sell out quickly.

  • Visit popular parks on weekdays and early in the morning to avoid crowds.

  • Check the NPS website (nps.gov) for current conditions, closures, and reservation requirements before your visit.
