Visa Waiver Program (VWP)
The Visa Waiver Program allows citizens of 42 eligible countries to visit the United States for up to 90 days for tourism or business without a visa. Eligible countries include the UK, most EU member states, Australia, Japan, South Korea, and others. Check the official US Department of State website for the current list of VWP countries.
ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization)
VWP travelers must apply for ESTA before boarding a US-bound flight or vessel. ESTA is an online application available at the official US Customs and Border Protection website (esta.cbp.dhs.gov). ESTA approval is typically granted within minutes but can take up to 72 hours. Apply at least 72 hours before departure. ESTA costs $21 and is valid for 2 years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first.
B-2 Tourist Visa
If your country is not part of the VWP, you must apply for a B-2 tourist visa at a US embassy or consulate in your country. Apply well in advance — processing times vary by country and can take several weeks or months. You will need to attend an in-person interview at the embassy. The visa fee is $185. Visit the US Department of State website (travel.state.gov) for the most current requirements and application procedures.
Entry Requirements
All visitors must have a valid passport. US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers will ask about your travel plans, accommodation, and finances at the port of entry. Have your hotel booking confirmation, return ticket, and proof of sufficient funds available. Be honest and concise in your answers.
Canadian Citizens
Citizens of Canada do not need a visa or ESTA to visit the United States for short stays. A valid Canadian passport is required.
Key Tips
Apply for ESTA at the official CBP website (esta.cbp.dhs.gov) — avoid third-party sites that charge additional fees.
ESTA does not guarantee entry to the United States — CBP officers make the final determination at the port of entry.
Do not overstay your authorized period of admission — this can result in being barred from future entry.
